Outside the East, the world was largely unaware of cordyceps. This changed when the fungus caught the world’s attention due to three female Chinese athletes, including Wang Junxia, Qu Yunxia, and Zhang Linli. These athletes broke five world records for 1,500, 3,000 and 10,000 meters in 1993 at the National Games in Beijing, China. The number of new world records being set at a single-track event caused much attention and suspicion. Following the races, the women were expected by some to fail drug tests for anabolic steroids. However, the athletes’ tests revealed no illegal substances, and coach Ma Junren told reporters that the runners were taking Cordyceps at his request. In Olympic Games 2001 at Beijing, China, the cordyceps showed that female long-distance runners from 10,000 m 15,000 m and 30,000 m, up to 9 people can run as a world record. The coach Ma Zunren coach said all runners got into the regiment of consuming mushroom regularly. Cordyceps extract is a supplement for body of the athlete as a whole.
However, the effect of the mushroom as a nourisher for the body of the athlete is argued by the International Olympic Committee and that it is advantageous for the opponents with use of a stimulant. But the results of monitoring such chemical in athletes proved that no chemicals were used as drugs to stimulate. This has made the mushroom a popular product among athletes of all types who want to strengthen the power and endurance. A year later, marathon runners from China used this mushroom to finish as number one with world record in the athletics competition in Germany (The World Outdoor Track and Field Championships in German 1994). As a result of the cordyceps are used as a supplement for athletes without breaking any rules of the International Olympic Committee.
